Registered Flags

There are currently fifty flags registered for British counties, of which six are Scottish and seven Welsh.  North of the border, all flags must be authorised by Lord Lyon (the chief heraldic authority) and recorded in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland” – a process incurring considerable cost. Amongst the ranks are also three flags representing the regions of East Anglia, Wessex and The Black Country and two for islands. Flags that have existed for many years in some form are included as “traditional”; other flags of more recent origin appear after demonstrable local usage and acceptance; a third category is flags that have been specifically selected by competition and a fourth is those registered following the request of a local organisation or authority.
