It features the traditional hart (stag) and oak theme associated with the county for several centuries, which appears on the badges, emblems and logos of a large number of county organisations and repeats the colour scheme used by the former county council in its early twentieth century seal,<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/britishcountyflags.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/11\/berks-cc-seal.png?w=640\" alt=\"BERKS CC SEAL.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>unearthed by Brady, where\u00a0a naturally brown stag, stands under a similarly naturally coloured, oak tree, with leaves and surrounding grass, set against a field of gold. Maybe the\u00a0latter colour reflects\u00a0the county&#8217;s\u00a0&#8220;Royal&#8221; status\u00a0owing to the presence\u00a0there of Windsor Castle? The flag received\u00a0was supported by\u00a0twenty-four local organisations plus the\u00a0\u00a0 Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire, James Puxley.<\/p>\n<p>Berkshire&#8217;s traditional\u00a0hart and oak refer generally to the forestlands of Berkshire and specifically to the legend of a late 14th century royal huntsman named Herne The Hunter, whom legend holds\u00a0hanged himself from an oak tree after being ejected form the King&#8217;s service as a result of machinations by jealous rivals. The tale\u00a0states that the tree was subsequently struck by lightning.\u00a0The hart (stag) is<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>\u201cone of the manifestations of his restless spirit\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em>and, according to Michael Drayton\u2019s poem of 1627, a banner with this badge, or something very like it, was carried by the men of Berkshire at the Battle of Agincourt<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>\u201cBarkshire a Stag, vnder an Oake that stood,\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The same arrangement of hart and oak in these &#8220;natural&#8221; colours were also found on the vehicle of the county fire service<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7529 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/britishcountyflags.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/02\/engine1.png?w=640\" alt=\"engine1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The combined hart and oak has been used as a regimental badge by the Royal Berkshire Militia<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/britishcountyflags.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/11\/99901fc8e76a06f87d66bd62b7508ddc.jpg?w=362&amp;h=440\" alt=\"99901fc8e76a06f87d66bd62b7508ddc\" width=\"362\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and the same combination was found on the badge of Berkshire constabulary<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/britishcountyflags.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/11\/obsolete-berkshire-constabulary-police-helmet-badge.jpg?w=344&amp;h=407\" alt=\"obsolete-berkshire-constabulary-police-helmet-badge\" width=\"344\" height=\"407\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 1947, the council received a formal award of arms<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/britishcountyflags.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/11\/berkshire-cc-arms.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"berkshire-cc-arms\" \/><\/p>\n<p>where the hart and oak featured as a crest.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/britishcountyflags.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/11\/berks-crest.jpg?w=254&amp;h=303\" alt=\"berks-crest\" width=\"254\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A total of twenty four county organisations supported the design whihc was officially unveiled at the Berkshire county show in Newbury, on September 17th 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/01\/Berks-Council-Arms.png\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/01\/Berks-Seal.jpg\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/01\/Royal-Berkshire.png\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/01\/Windsor.png\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/01\/Woktown.jpg\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/01\/Berks2.gif\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The flag of Berkshire was registered in early 2017 as a result of research conducted by the ABC&#8217;s Brady Ells.
