An early rendition of the name of the town was Kilcudbrit, derived from the\u00a0Scots Gaelic &#8220;Cille Chuithbeirt&#8221; (Chapel of Cuthbert). The Anglo-Saxon saint&#8217;s remains were kept here for seven years between exhumation at\u00a0Lindisfarne and re-interment at Chester-le-Street. A &#8220;pectoral cross&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/cuthcross.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1571\" src=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/cuthcross.jpg\" alt=\"cuthcross\" width=\"201\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/cuthcross.jpg 201w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/cuthcross-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/cuthcross-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/cuthcross-160x160.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>was found on the saint\u2019s body when his tomb was opened in the nineteenth century. The original is on display in Durham Cathedral where he was eventually buried. This cross is consequently depicted on the flags of both County Durham and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/County-Durham.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1573\" src=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/County-Durham-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"County Durham\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/County-Durham-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/County-Durham-500x300.jpg 500w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/County-Durham-349x210.jpg 349w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/County-Durham-265x160.jpg 265w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/County-Durham.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> Kirkcudbrightshire.<\/p>\n<p>The county\u00a0is also the eastern portion of the ancient territory of Galloway whose traditional arms (Lords of Galloway) were a silver (white) lion on blue field\u00a0with a touch of red on the claws and tongue<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/Galloway.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1572 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/Galloway.jpg\" alt=\"Galloway\" width=\"201\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Galloway.jpg 201w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Galloway-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Galloway-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Galloway-160x160.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An amended version was adopted by the former county council<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/Kirkcudbrightshire-CC-Arms.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1587 aligncenter\" style=\"width: 184px;height: 198px\" src=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/Kirkcudbrightshire-CC-Arms-243x300.jpg\" alt=\"Kirkcudbrightshire CC Arms\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Kirkcudbrightshire-CC-Arms-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Kirkcudbrightshire-CC-Arms-170x210.jpg 170w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Kirkcudbrightshire-CC-Arms-129x160.jpg 129w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Kirkcudbrightshire-CC-Arms.jpg 464w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>which included a green and white chequered band in reference to\u00a0the checked tablecloth used by the\u00a0Stewards of the Lords of Galloway\u00a0when collecting taxes and other dues. The colours of the flag are accordingly the distinct green and white of the\u00a0&#8220;Stewartry of Kirkcudbright&#8221; counterchanged to reflect the green and white checks.<\/p>\n<p>The flag was created by Philip Tibbetts, who consulted with the county&#8217;s Lord Liuetenant regarding the adoption of a flag.
