The\u00a0clan Cunningham was the local landowning family\u00a0who bore arms containing a &#8220;shakefork&#8221; device<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/Shakefork.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1607 aligncenter\" style=\"width: 153px;height: 162px\" src=\"https:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/Shakefork.jpg\" alt=\"Shakefork\" width=\"105\" height=\"118\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>which later appeared in the civic arms of the local district authority<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/shake.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1608\" style=\"width: 139px;height: 168px\" src=\"https:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/shake.jpg\" alt=\"shake\" width=\"110\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/shake.jpg 110w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/shake-104x160.jpg 104w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The shakefork is recalled on the proposed design by the black pall running from hoist to fly. A red chevron on a white field\u00a0formed the arms of the Earl of Carrick<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/Carrick-Arms.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1609\" src=\"https:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/Carrick-Arms.jpg\" alt=\"Carrick Arms\" width=\"137\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and it later appeared in the civic arms of the Kyle Carrick council<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/KyleCarrick.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1612 aligncenter\" style=\"width: 106px;height: 138px\" src=\"https:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/KyleCarrick.jpg\" alt=\"KyleCarrick\" width=\"98\" height=\"118\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The red chevron\u00a0consequently features\u00a0on the\u00a0proposed flag\u00a0as a\u00a0red fimbriation of the black pall,\u00a0at the hoist, while the blue fimbriation on the fly denotes the blue and white fess (chequered blue and white bar)\u00a0of the Kyle district, as seen in the above district arms;\u00a0this is\u00a0taken from the arms of John Stewart, Lord of Kyle (later King Robert III),<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/John-Stewart.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1611 aligncenter\" style=\"width: 105px;height: 125px\" src=\"https:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/John-Stewart-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"John Stewart\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/John-Stewart-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/John-Stewart-161x210.jpg 161w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/John-Stewart-123x160.jpg 123w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/John-Stewart.jpg 347w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">In the centre of the pall is a golden lyre as appeared in\u00a0the\u00a0first awarded arms of Ayrshire county council<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/Ayrshire-CC-Arms-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1613\" style=\"width: 154px;height: 171px\" src=\"https:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/Ayrshire-CC-Arms-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ayrshire CC Arms 1\" width=\"258\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Ayrshire-CC-Arms-1.jpg 258w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Ayrshire-CC-Arms-1-180x210.jpg 180w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Ayrshire-CC-Arms-1-137x160.jpg 137w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 258px) 100vw, 258px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">which\u00a0represented the musical and\u00a0artistic heritage of the county &#8211; including being the home of\u00a0famed poet Robbie\u00a0Burns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">It may be noted that the red chevron, blue and white checks and\u00a0black shakefork all appeared in in the second awarded set of arms used by Ayrshire county council<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/Ayrshire-CC-Arms-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1614 aligncenter\" style=\"width: 144px;height: 178px\" src=\"https:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/Ayrshire-CC-Arms-2-259x300.jpg\" alt=\"Ayrshire CC Arms 2\" width=\"259\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Ayrshire-CC-Arms-2-259x300.jpg 259w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Ayrshire-CC-Arms-2-181x210.jpg 181w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Ayrshire-CC-Arms-2-138x160.jpg 138w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Ayrshire-CC-Arms-2.jpg 278w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">and that the propsed flag from Philip Tibbetts\u00a0therefore\u00a0maintains several resonant local symbolic traditions. Additionally, a local resident who grew up in the county declared upon\u00a0seeing this proposed design \u201c&#8230; when I look at it I see the black as the coal from the mines we used to have, the blue is the rivers and the Firth of Clyde and the white base as the milk from the Ayrshire cows which represent the farming which forms a large part of the county now&#8230;.. red..the blood spilt by Cromwell in days gone by and the blood of the covenanters spread across the hills and moors of Ayrshire&#8230;the sunsets over the coast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Another suggestion, from Brady Ells<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/AyrshireElls.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3327\" src=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/AyrshireElls.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"195\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>is derived from the arms used by the former Ayrshire County Council<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/Ayrshire-CC-Arms-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ayrshire CC Arms 1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>which featured a red saltire on a gold field and two lyres to represent the locality\u2019s artistic heritage, this being the home of the poet Robbie Burns.
