The traditional local name of this locality is “Merse” related to the word marsh, in reference to the local terrain. This is symbolised by the\u00a0green and white stripes in the proposed flag from Philip Tibbetts.\u00a0In 1890 the local county\u00a0council was awarded\u00a0“canting arms”<\/p>\n

\"Berwickshire<\/a><\/p>\n

i.e. arms which refer to the\u00a0name of their bearer in a punning fashion. These depicted\u00a0a bear in front of a Wych elm,\u00a0playing on the name Ber\u2019wick = \u201cbear wych\u201d. The ursine theme and prominent green and white colours of the former county council’s arms are repeated in the proposed flag.<\/p>\n

The bear and wych\u00a0are also\u00a0in this proposal by\u00a0Brady Ells<\/p>\n

\"Berwickshire\"<\/p>\n

which is\u00a0further inspired by the bi-colour fields of the arms of the county town, the\u00a0Burgh of Duns
\n\"Burgh<\/p>\n

and the Burgh of Coldstream, both granted in 1952.<\/p>\n

This feature also appeared in the arms of Berwick-upon-Tweed borough council, across the border in England, awarded in 1958 and even registered with Scotland’s highest heraldic authority, the Lord Lyon<\/p>\n
