This is symbolised by the\u00a0green and white stripes in the proposed flag from Philip Tibbetts.\u00a0In 1890 the local county\u00a0council was awarded\u00a0&#8220;canting arms&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2014\/02\/Berwickshire-CC-Arms.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"noframe wp-image-1694 size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Berwickshire-CC-Arms.jpg\" alt=\"Berwickshire CC Arms\" width=\"218\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Berwickshire-CC-Arms.jpg 218w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Berwickshire-CC-Arms-177x210.jpg 177w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2014\/02\/Berwickshire-CC-Arms-135x160.jpg 135w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>i.e. arms which refer to the\u00a0name of their bearer in a punning fashion. These depicted\u00a0a bear in front of a Wych elm,\u00a0playing on the name Ber\u2019wick = \u201cbear wych\u201d.
