The former Kinross-shire County Council bore arms that depicted Loch Leven Castle\u00a0and the\u00a0island in Loch Leven, upon which it is built.<\/p>\n

This is the\u00a0castle, shown below,\u00a0in which Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned and forced to abdicate in 1567 and from which she escaped in 1568.<\/p>\n

Accordingly Leonardo Piccioni has fashioned two variations of a potential flag for the county.\u00a0Both\u00a0designs depict a silhouette of the castle in white, against a green backdrop, representative of the rather lush island\u00a0terrain where it is situated; the island is similarly green on the council’s arms. In base, the\u00a0traditional aquatic reference\u00a0of blue and white wavy stripes in base,\u00a0as found on the arms, symbolises Loch Leven. On the former council’s arms the roof of the castle is shown with a pitched roof and an apex and the first of Leonardo’s proposals reflects this depiction. On his second design, the castle is realised as it actually stands today, with a crenelated flat roof. A similar depiction of Loch Leven Castle appears on the arms of the local Perth College, of the University of the Highlands and Islands.<\/p>\n
