This design was attributed as the arms of the ancient Welsh ruler Gwaithfoed and his kingdom\u00a0of Ceredigion,\u00a0from which the modern county derives and was incorporated into the arms<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" noframe aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2012\/01\/Cardiganshire-CC-Arms.jpg\" alt=\"Cardiganshire CC Arms\" width=\"163\" height=\"230\" \/><\/p>\n<p>used by the local council in the top left quadrant.<\/p>\n<p>The erstwhile administration of Dyfed also\u00a0included the\u00a0Gwaithfoed arms to signify the inclusion of Ceredigion\u00a0as part of its territorial remit<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2012\/01\/Dyfed-Deheubarth-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2597 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2012\/01\/Dyfed-Deheubarth-2-300x184.png\" alt=\"Dyfed Deheubarth 2\" width=\"580\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2012\/01\/Dyfed-Deheubarth-2-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2012\/01\/Dyfed-Deheubarth-2-487x300.png 487w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2012\/01\/Dyfed-Deheubarth-2-341x210.png 341w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2012\/01\/Dyfed-Deheubarth-2-259x160.png 259w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2012\/01\/Dyfed-Deheubarth-2-355x218.png 355w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2012\/01\/Dyfed-Deheubarth-2-100x61.png 100w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2012\/01\/Dyfed-Deheubarth-2.png 614w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>so there\u00a0are\u00a0precedents for use of this design to represent the county.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly several heraldic sources indicate an original version of the Gwaithfoed arms\u00a0with these colours reversed<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" noframe aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/flags.abcounties.com\/files\/2012\/01\/Earlier-arms.1.jpg\" alt=\"Earlier arms.\" width=\"140\" height=\"158\" \/><\/p>\n<p>. Such switching of the colours of field and charge in attributed arms is not uncommon in early Welsh heraldry but by the twentieth century, the council\u2019s use of the gold lion on black indicates that this had become the established form and the locally familiar design.
