The design is a\u00a0combined saltire and Nordic cross symbolising Sutherland\u2019s early history as a Scottish territory under Viking control. At the point where the arms of the two crosses meet, is a golden sun recalling \u201cthe sun raised high in the south for the origin of the county name \u201cSouth Land\u201d as well as the sunrises seen on the East Coast and the sunsets on the county\u2019s West Coast. The black colour of the cross recalls the peat of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flow_Country\">Flow Country<\/a>\u201d and dark skies and together with the white recall the central colours of the former Sutherland coat of arms,<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16357 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/britishcountyflags.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/04\/Capture.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"Capture\" \/><\/p>\n<p>which depicted a black raven or eagle against a white field. The flag replaced the formerly selected design featuring a front facing bi-coloured eagle against a counterchanged red and yellow background<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2017\/11\/Sutherland.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3407 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2017\/11\/Sutherland.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>the winning design in the Sutherland flag competition which was announced in local press on January 28th 2018. This had proven locally unpopular both for its specific design and because of the manner in which it was selected without public consultation.<\/p>\n<p>Along the hoist three gold stars derived from the arms of the earldom of Sutherland<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2017\/11\/earl-of-suth1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3408 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2017\/11\/earl-of-suth1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2017\/11\/earl-of-suth1.png 262w, https:\/\/abcounties.com\/flags\/files\/2017\/11\/earl-of-suth1-136x150.png 136w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and are also seen as reflective of the locality&#8217;s intense sunrises and sunsets<\/p>\n<p>The Sutherland competition took place across September and October 2017, with judging taking place on Monday October 30th<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13357 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/britishcountyflags.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/04\/img_2008.jpg\" width=\"637\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p>at Drummuie in the county. Entries were received from as far afield as New Zealand Japan and Sweden with many featuring the county&#8217;s wildlife. A lot of these flags you would not know one from the other. This will stand out at a distance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for the panel said that an eagle had featured on a considerable number of the entries and noted that,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe eagle was chosen as a unifying feature of the flag \u2013 the west (of Sutherland) now has\u00a0a fair population of\u00a0 white-tailed sea eagles\u00a0\u00a0and the east<\/p>\n<p>has golden eagles\u00a0\u00a0in good numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A distribution reflected in the bicoloured form of the eagle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was felt that the bird\u2019s swooping pose, albeit perhaps unique on a flag, was considered bold and easy to identify from a distance\u201d The original design was an amalgamation of several submissions, combining three gold stars on red from one submission, with a red and yellow counter-changed pattern from a second and a front facing swooping eagle from a third.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16362 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/britishcountyflags.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/04\/suth1.png?w=640\" alt=\"suth1.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text_exposed_show\">The third flag featured a\u00a0 golden eagle, face on, set against a purple background reflecting the Purple Saxifrage, wild orchids, Purple Milk-Vetch and of course wild heather (caluna vulgaris) that can be found across the county. The pentagon shape is a stylised reference to the roughly five sided shape of the county,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full aligncenter wp-image-16260\" src=\"https:\/\/britishcountyflags.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/04\/pent.png?w=640\" alt=\"pent\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text_exposed_show\">whilst the blue and white surround recalls both snowy peaks against a cold sky<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full aligncenter wp-image-16259\" src=\"https:\/\/britishcountyflags.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/04\/peaks.png?w=640\" alt=\"peaks\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text_exposed_show\">and the foamy seas of the coastline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/britishcountyflags.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/04\/seas.png?w=712&amp;h=90\" alt=\"seas\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sutherland flag won a vote held in late 2018 to select a flag for the county.
