Key Points
The Historic Counties are our heritage, present and future. They were created in ancient times and derived from natural and man-made boundaries. Their use provides a focal point for local identity, culture and geography. Most of the Historic Counties existed at the time of the Norman Conquest and their identity continued to be preserved in the minds of local people until wide-spread confusion arrived in 1974.
