Organising county flag competitions

  1. Inevitably the vast majority of county flags will require some form of a public vote in order for them to be registered. At all stages in the process of organising a competition, the guidance contained in the Flag Institute’s guide to Creating Local and Community Flags will be invaluable.
  2. Consult the Flag Institute, the ABC and identify current proposals and ideas. You will need to plan how you will run a competition, or establish whether the ABC will be happy to run the competition.
  3. When you have worked out a way forward, it is essential you establish a good relationship with a local media outlet in order for the competition to be adequately publicised and to raise support.
  4. You will need to arrange a road map for your competition – when will entries be received, when will they be short-listed and who will sit on the panel to do so, and when and how will a vote be held? The Flag Institute can provide model forms, competition rules and importantly – help and advice.
  5. Go for it! Remember, good publicity is a must and you will need a lot of energy and time, as well as good communication skills.
