- Inevitably the vast majority of county flags will require some form of a public vote in order for them to be registered. At all stages in the process of organising a competition, the guidance contained in the Flag Institute’s guide to Creating Local and Community Flags will be invaluable.
- Consult the Flag Institute, the ABC and identify current proposals and ideas. You will need to plan how you will run a competition, or establish whether the ABC will be happy to run the competition.
- When you have worked out a way forward, it is essential you establish a good relationship with a local media outlet in order for the competition to be adequately publicised and to raise support.
- You will need to arrange a road map for your competition – when will entries be received, when will they be short-listed and who will sit on the panel to do so, and when and how will a vote be held? The Flag Institute can provide model forms, competition rules and importantly – help and advice.
- Go for it! Remember, good publicity is a must and you will need a lot of energy and time, as well as good communication skills.
