Historic County Flags Day 23rd July 2025 has been another spectacular celebration of our county heritage. Our thanks are due to Jim McMahon MP, Minister of State at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government for once again displaying the county flags in Parliament Square for the week. All those county flags included in the Flag Institute’s Flag Registry are on display. Our thanks are also due to Andrew Rosindell MP who has submitted an Early Day Motion in support of Historic County Flags Day. The motion, see below, reads as a manifesto of everything ABC wants to see.

The booby prize on Historic County Flags Day 2025 goes to Cambridgeshire County Council. The council proudly displayed the Cambridgeshire flag at its headquarters in Alconbury. But, hang on, Alconbury is in Huntingdonshire! Oh, dear.

  • Great EDM by Andrew Rosindell MP, well done and thank you. The only thing I would add is a call for each individual address in the UK to have the historic county name added on to the Royal Mail Post Code database. There is no need to change the Post Code, just insert the historic county name into each address. This extra line can then be built into the commercial feeds that are used by all organisations and businesses for their addressing systems. No need to change how mail is sorted, but allow people to have the identity of where they live restored and recognised.

  • Saturday 13th September 2025 marks Rutland Day and the Rutland flag will fly in Parliament’s New Palace Yard from Friday 12th September 2025 for the whole weekend to celebrate the country’s smallest county.

Speaking about this announcement, Alicia Kearns MP said: ‘Rutland Day is a wonderful celebration of our communities and all things Rutland so I am enormously proud to see our gold and green colours flying in Parliament on this special day, especially when the future of our County is in doubt.

‘I made the request to Mr Speaker to fly our flag, and I’m very grateful to him for agreeing so I can make my own small contribution to our celebrations.

‘I feel incredibly fortunate to represent our beautiful part of the world, there is no doubt we live up to our motto ‘multum in parvo,’ and over the next three days, every visitor to Westminster will see our flag flying and hopefully learn a little more about our special county.’

Celebrations for Rutland Day will be taking place on Saturday 13th September at Oakham Castle with a free family day out with local stalls, historical re-enactments and fascinating local history.
