A society dedicated to celebrating and promoting the 92 historic counties of the United Kingdom and the important part they play in our culture, heritage and geography.
Shropshire has the privilege of kicking off the county day season for 2026. Monday 23rd February 2026 is Shropshire Day, the feast day of St Milburga, a day to celebrate everything we love about this beautiful shire.
And there is much to love. The Shropshire Hills which cover much of the south of the county. The Wrekin, perhaps the most famous natural landmark in the county, all 1,335 feet of it. The River Severn, which courses through the heart of the county, curls around the county town of Shrewsbury and then on to the Ironbridge Gorge. The ancient towns of Bridgnorth, Oswestry, Ludlow, Wem, Market Drayton, Church Stretton and Whitchurch. The new town of Telford. The Long Mynd. Clun Forest. Wenlock Edge. And so much more. We raise a glass to All Friends Around the Wrekin.
A Shropshire Day service was held at St Mary the Virgin Church, Jackfield on Sun 22nd Feb 2026. (With thanks to the Shropshire Lieutenancy.)The service was followed by a modern pilgrimage along the Ironbridge Gorge, crossing the River Severn at Coalport Bridge. A further service was then held at Church of St Mary, Sutton Maddock. (With thanks to the Shropshire Lieutenancy.)The services were led by The Rt Revd Richard Jackson, Bishop of Hereford and The Rt Revd Dr Michael Ipgrave, Bishop of Lichfield in the presence of Anna Turner, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire – seen here on the Coalport Bridge. Shropshire is covered by the Church of England dioceses of Hereford and Lichfield. The two churches also lie in the council areas of Telford and Wrekin (Jackfield) and Shropshire (Sutton Maddock).
