Somerset Day is celebrated each year on 11th May. It marks Alfred the Great’s call to arms and the gathering of ‘all the people of Somerset’ to march against the invading Viking army. Devised, planned and promoted by our friends at Passion for Somerset, over the last ten years it has grown to rival Yorkshire Day and Lancashire Day as one of the biggest county day celebrations in the country. This year was no exception, with the celebrations taking place over the whole weekend of 10-11th May. The support of local people, businesses and organisations help make this the huge community event it has become. BBC Somerset has also been very supportive.

Highlights of 2025 included the Big Natural Sing at Taunton Brewhouse; the Barrel and Boom Festival at Rich’s Cider featuring the Wurzels; the eat:Taunton Food Festival; Somerset Songs of Praise at St Mary’s Church, Langport; Evensong for Somerset with Wellington School Chapel Choir at St John’s Church, Taunton; the Hobby Horse parade in Watchet; the illumination of St Michael’s Tower on Glastonbury Tor with the Somerset flag; and many other local events as part of the Big Somerset Picnic. Along with lots of local flag flying and cider drinking. We present photos of some of the highlights.
